Top 10 Tips For Wedding Dress Shopping
Top 10 Tips For Wedding Dress Shopping
Starting your search for the perfect wedding dress can be a daunting task. Seen as one of the most important parts (if not ‘the’ most important) for the bride, it is no small feat and takes a lot of time and consideration. To help you along the way we thought we’d put together a list of our Top 10 Tips to help you find ‘the one’!
Set a Budget
This may seem obvious, but it’s important to have a budget in mind before you start out on your quest! Nowadays, a lot of wedding dress boutiques will section off their range of dresses based on price (which means there’s less temptation!!) so have a think about how much you’re willing to spend. It’s also a good idea to have a look online or call around some stores beforehand to see what their price range is.
Don’t start looking too early
12 months is seen as the perfect timescale for choosing your wedding dress. Any earlier and you risk falling in love with a dress when you’re not actually ready to buy, and any later could leave you in a frenzy over finding one you like! The best advice we can give is to start looking for your dress when you’re actually ready to buy. It’s important to finalise other aspects of your wedding before starting the search such as venue, style, theme and colour scheme as these will all affect your wedding dress choice.
Have a think about what you do and don’t like and do some research online to see which stores stock the types of style/designers that you like. Remember there are a LOT of wedding dress stores to choose from, and it’s impossible to visit every single one…it’s also more likely to confuse you too!
Think about what you like
The internet and pinterest are your best friends! It can sometimes be difficult to explain what you’re looking for so why not create a pinterest board that you can show to the sales assistant on your visit so that she knows exactly what you have in mind. Or do it the old fashioned way and take some magazine clippings with you!
Keep an Open Mind/Listen to Recommendations
Although it’s good to have an idea of what you like, it’s good to keep an open mind when wedding dress shopping. How many brides do you know who have had a style in mind then ended up with something completely different on their big day?! If a style catches your eye that isn’t necessarily ‘you’ give it a whirl…you might end up falling in love with it once you try it on!
Wear the correct underwear
One of the most important tips we can give is to make sure you’re wearing the correct undergarments when you try on dresses, so get fitted for these before you go wedding dress shopping! You’d be surprised at how big a difference your underwear choice can make on the overall look and feel of your dress!
Take only your nearest and dearest
It’s easy to get carried away and invite your whole posse of friends and family when searching for the perfect wedding dress but we strongly advise against this! Too many different opinions and conflicting advice can end up being confusing and hinder your search rather than helping. Instead, choose only one or two of your closest friends and family whose opinions really matter to you. You can always invite more of your friends to your dress fittings later if you’d like them to see your choice before the big day!
Bring your Accessories
Accessories can totally change the look of your dress so if you’ve already chosen these, take them along to your appointments. Most boutiques will have shoes and some accessories on hand for you to try on but if you have a heel height in mind, bring some shoes along with you so that you can get an overall feel for how the dress will fall with your heels.
Buy a dress that fits
This may seem obvious but even if you plan on losing 10lbs before the big day choose a dress that fits you now. It’s a lot easier to take a dress in rather than to make a dress work that’s too tight. It’ll also be a lot cheaper in the long run!
Trust your own instincts
If you have any doubts or need reassured about how a dress looks on you, move on! If you don’t feel completely happy about it now it’s unlikely that you will feel any differently on your big day. When you find ‘the one’ you’ll know because you won’t want to try on anything else!
We hope this has given you some inspiration and good tips for wedding dress shopping so what are you waiting for…get out there and find ‘the one’!
